Ela Orchard

Three generations of Elas have cultivated apples and pears - more than 30 varieties - at Ela Orchard for more than 80 years. To produce fruit, each blossom must be pollinated by an insect - most often a bee. In return, the blossoms provide food - nectar and pollen - for the honeybees in early spring. Throughout the spring and summer, the honeybees collect nectar from a smörgåsbord of woodland, pasture, crop and village flowers; these include spring wildflowers, Black Locust, Basswood, clover, alfalfa, and soybeans. The resulting honey varies from year to year according to the weather conditions and varieties of flora; it is typically light amber in color with an exceptional flavor.
